Important limitations
- Only the primary still image is exported; animation, gain maps, metadata, and additional images are omitted.
- PNG output is often much larger than AVIF.
- Decoding uses 8-bit display pixels, so HDR, high-bit-depth, and color-profile fidelity are not guaranteed.
- Files above 20 MB, 40 megapixels, or 16,384 pixels on one side are rejected.
Common questions
AVIF to PNG Converter FAQ
Does PNG improve AVIF quality?
No. PNG avoids another lossy encoding step, but it only stores the 8-bit pixels produced by AVIF decoding.
Does it work when the browser lacks AVIF decoding?
The converter detects native decode failure and then loads Tool Packer's browser-local WebAssembly compatibility decoder.
Are animations converted?
No. Only the primary still image is exported.
