Know before you start
Important limitations
- JPG and PNG metadata and color profiles are not copied into the AVIF output.
- The encoder uses 8-bit pixels and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling; exact color and fine chroma edges can change.
- AVIF encoding can temporarily make the tab less responsive, especially for large images.
- Files above 20 MB, 40 megapixels, or 16,384 pixels on one side are rejected.

PNG/JPG to AVIF FAQ
Can AVIF be smaller than JPG or PNG?
Often, but not always. Results depend on image content, dimensions, quality, and the source's existing compression.
Is PNG transparency kept?
Decoded alpha pixels are passed to the AVIF encoder with high alpha quality. Inspect the preview before replacing an original.
Why can conversion take longer?
AV1 encoding is computationally expensive and runs locally in a single browser thread for broad deployment compatibility.
