APA Title Case: Tool Packer Profile and Examples

The implemented APA decision sequence

The converter first normalizes the input through its baseline title-case engine, restores known acronyms and proper terms, and then applies the APA profile. It lowercases internal a, an, and the; the coordinating conjunctions for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so; as and if; and recognized prepositions of one to three letters.

The first word and the first word following a colon, em dash, or line break are capitalized. Words outside the minor lists remain capitalized. The profile deliberately does not force a final short preposition or other minor word to uppercase, which creates a visible difference from several other available profiles.

• to, at, in, and for can remain lowercase internally.
• with, from, over, and through are treated as major by length.
• A subtitle begins again after the implemented boundary punctuation.

The final-word difference is easy to test

For “a path from here to,” the APA profile returns “A Path From Here to.” From has four letters and remains capitalized; the final to stays lowercase because the profile applies its minor-word rule even at the end. Tool Packer’s AP profile instead returns “A Path From Here To.”

That example is intentionally awkward as prose because it isolates the engine difference. In real academic writing, the destination’s required title and reference formatting also determine whether title case belongs there at all. APA uses both title case and sentence case in different contexts, so choosing APA in a converter is not a substitute for identifying the required context.

Title case is only one APA formatting choice

Capitalization rules do not decide italics, bold styling, heading level, quotation marks, reference punctuation, or whether a work’s title should instead use sentence case. Those decisions depend on where the title appears. Preserve the original text and apply the format required for the heading, paper title, table title, figure title, citation, or reference entry you are preparing.

Proper names and established spellings remain important. Tool Packer restores a bounded dictionary of terms such as GitHub, iPhone, macOS, and OpenAI and always canonicalizes recognized acronyms such as API, HTML, NASA, and SQL. Add a request-scoped custom term when a required name is not built in.

Know where deterministic casing stops

The engine identifies words and separators, not full grammatical roles. It cannot always determine whether a short word is a preposition, adverb, particle, or part of an idiom. Its shared compound rule also provides consistency rather than a complete reproduction of every APA compound provision.

Use the output as an editable draft. Turn on explanations, inspect ambiguous words, and follow current APA Style guidance or an instructor’s requirements.
